The Fix

Americans should just relax whenever the French engage in spirited intellectual exchanges. If that builds French confidence in what is ultimately decided, everyone wins. Of course if you want to jump in and join the fun, all the better. But losing patience, showing frustration, and especially trying to cut off the discussion will only annoy the French, and may even alarm them if they think you’re in too much of a hurry. If you listen to them, they just might return the favor (on occasion) and listen to you.

The French should know that Americans will get impatient if discussion goes on too long and may very well stop paying attention. In cases where a lengthy discussion is in fact warranted, you should explain the stakes and why so much back-and-forth is necessary. But to prolong a discussion that clearly isn’t “going anywhere” (as Americans like to say) will annoy Americans and may cause them to stop taking you seriously.
